Summer Reading Program

Summer vacation reading programs combine two activities:
1)  Independent reading or shared reading with another family member
2)  Programming to enrich children's experiences and to encourage children and their families to visit the library
Together these experiences give children the opportunity to learn to enjoy reading and the library.

The Lancaster County Library Summer Reading Club kicks off its registration during the Family Reading Festival each May.  The festival is held on the lawn of the library and features many fun, hands-on activities for children of all ages.  Summer programs start in June and end in July.  Children are encouraged to attend these programs which include:  puppet shows, story times, magicians, storytellers and children's theater.

Storytime Express
First Steps of Lancaster County

Story Time Express is an educational enrichment program funded by First Steps and offered free to preschool facilities in Lancaster County.  With the use of stories, finger plays, puppets, songs and much more, preschoolers learn new skills in a fun environment.  Visits are made once a month to each of the participating child care centers by the Children's Librarian and her assistant.  Learning kits are loaned to each child care center on a rotating basis.  Planned around specific subjects, each kit contains books, games, videos, music and hands-on activities.
