The Lancaster County Library

The Lancaster County Library's mission is to provide materials and resources to meet the changing information needs of a growing community.  The library system consists of the main library, the Kershaw Branch and one bookmobile.

The main library at 313 S. White Street in Lancaster offers children’s programs, reference assistance and a wide variety of informational and recreational materials. Online databases and Internet access are available for public use. These services also extend to the Kershaw Branch library on Fork Hill Road in Kershaw.

The Bookmobile provides outreach services to remote areas of the county and to children and senior adults in day care settings. The Bookmobile delivers books, audiobooks and magazines to people who do not have ready access to the library.

Getting a Library Card

Library cards are free to all South Carolina residents. Those patrons who do not live within the state may obtain library cards by paying an annual fee. Library cards are issued at any Lancaster County Library branch with proof of current name and address. First time check out is limited to five items.

Your library card can be used at each branch and the bookmobile, but you must present the card each time you borrow materials. Most items circulate for three weeks. Popular fiction and request books are checked out for two weeks while videos and DVDs circulate for one week.

The card holder is responsible for all materials checked out on his or her library card. Parents are responsible for items checked out by their children. Report the loss or theft of a card promptly to avoid its unauthorized use. A card holder is responsible until loss is reported. Report address or phone number changes immediately by calling 803-285-1502.

Renewing Materials

Items can be renewed twice with the exception of videos, DVDs and Books on CD which have a renewal limit of one time. An item on hold for another patron cannot be renewed. To renew library materials you may call to request the renewal, go to either branch or visit our website and renew online. A pin number is required as well as your library card number to do all online transactions.  You can ask any staff member for a pin number.

Returning Materials

Library materials may be returned to the Main branch, the Kershaw branch or to the bookmobile. Outside book returns are located for your convenience at each branch.

Requesting Materials

If an item is not on the shelf, you may ask a staff member to place a hold on that item for you. You can also  go online to request items that are currently checked out.  (NOTE:  your pin number and library card number are needed for this transaction.)  When the material is available, you will be notified by phone.

Overdue Charges

The charge for overdue items is 10 cents per day. The charge for lost materials is the replacement cost of the item. Fees may be charged for items which are returned damaged. Excessive charges for overdue, lost or damaged materials will result in loss of borrowing privileges.

Interlibrary Loan

The Lancaster County Library may borrow specific books, if available, from another library. Ask at the circulation desk for details about this service.
